The numbers can also be on an imaginary number line, or you can imagine them on your ten fingers.
For your shopping list, change the suitcase game to "I'm packing a shopping cart..." Or mentally group groceries and household items into meaningful groups: "everything for the fridge" or "cleaning supplies." You can also improve your memory by visualizing the "gaps" in your apartment: missing toilet paper here, missing a crate of drinks there. Do you hear the printer beeping because it's out of paper, and your child whining because there's no chocolate?

a) Mental arithmetic
Ask someone to give you some math problems. Start simple: First, add two or three numbers, then multiply a one-digit number and a two-digit number, and so on—all in your head, of course, because you want to improve your memory and not leave this skill to the calculator.
b) Memorization
Learn song lyrics or poems by heart and recite one of them over and over again. You can also learn vocabulary or recipes. Some people have memorized something from an encyclopedia every day by simply opening the book somewhere and tapping on a passage with their index finger.

For many, the idea that we no longer have to memorize numbers in the age of the internet, calculators, laptops, etc. is a pipe dream – and it is simply an illusion that these technological aids would free us from all numerical clutter. Particularly busy and ambitious people, both professionally and privately, rely on having a vast amount of numbers, data, and codes at their fingertips, as it would take too long to look them up in notebooks or mini-calculators. Even a simple order executed via online or telephone banking can sometimes require a whole collection of numbers: personal identification number, PIN, IBAN and BIC – and also the security identification numbers if you want to restructure your share portfolio. Many people think, "I have no problem with numbers at all; I can remember them really well!"
