Frustfrei lernen in Schule, Studium und Beruf

Frustration-free learning at school, university and work

The majority of our students view learning as boring, even unpleasant and arduous, and something that is rarely successful. This creates frustration, and this frustration, in turn, hinders learning—a vicious cycle that must be broken. The solution is to overcome the frustration barrier, and this applies not only to learning but to many demanding activities.

Let's take learning a language, for example. When you start learning French, it's not easy at all. Speaking French isn't really fun at first; you struggle to understand even simple things, and that doesn't initially give you any sense of achievement. After a while, you're still not fluent, but you start to like the language. You might read your first novel in the original language, or spend your next vacation in France with a host family who doesn't speak a word of German. Suddenly, speaking French is fun! These are experiences you wouldn't be able to enjoy if you'd given up right away, if you hadn't overcome the frustration barrier.

However, if you manage to overcome this barrier, anyone can become good at almost anything—maybe not excellent, but still good. Once you've overcome this early hurdle in acquiring a skill, which makes learning painful, you reach the enjoyable part afterward. Now the increasing mastery and routine feel good and bring a sense of achievement.

And here are some of the most important tips to overcome the initial frustration of learning:

1. Accept that you are not perfect

Leave your ego behind. When you simply admit that you're not yet good at what you want to learn, you're no longer trying to protect your self-image and appear qualified.

This may contradict the usual method of building self-confidence, but you have to understand that achievement is not the goal. Rather, the goal is to accept your inadequacy and then use that to keep going despite all your mistakes.

2. Surround yourself with people who have made it

You have to firmly believe that what you're planning is possible. This is only possible if you surround yourself with people who have already successfully navigated the path ahead of you.

This will not only give you great ideas and their success will rub off on you, but you will also see more clearly the frustration barrier and that things will get easier at some point.

3. Study the learning process carefully

Invest a lot of time in understanding how to accomplish the task you've set yourself. When you do, two things will happen:

First, you'll come up with creative ideas that optimize and shorten your learning process. Second, you'll gain confidence in the learning process, making you less likely to give up out of frustration.

4. Commit to discipline

Sometimes the best way to overcome frustration is simply through discipline. If you commit to learning a certain amount every day, you can eventually overcome your inner demons simply by dedicating enough time. Successful people have done this in countless fields. Their inner desire to become good at something has been able to overcome their inner demons.

Intensive learning requires intensive brain work. That's why we developed BrainEffect Academy, which is specifically tailored to the brain's needs during stressful study and exam periods.

How to improve memory and make learning easier

Learning and memory are directly related; we can't learn anything without committing the facts to memory. (We're talking about declarative memory here, as opposed to procedural memory, i.e., learning activities like riding a bike or dancing.) So how can we train our memory so that learning becomes easier?

There are a number of methods you can use to support your memory and learn and remember facts better, the so-called mnemonic techniques.

The loci method

The method of loci is a learning technique that involves memorizing a series of objects by associating them with specific locations or waypoints. For example, you can mentally distribute the items on a shopping list around your apartment: the cucumbers on the dresser, the sugar on the stove, the cream on the sofa, etc. Then, when you're out shopping, you mentally walk through the apartment and "find" the items again.

The image association technique

If you want to remember a person's name, memorize their face and try to associate an image with the name. Images are easier to remember than names. This image can be absurd or far-fetched. But choose the first association that comes to mind, because that's the easiest to remember.

Music as a memory aid

You've probably already experienced how easy it is to remember the lyrics of songs when paired with the melody. This technique can also be used as a learning aid. You sing a melody to a list of facts you want to learn.

Key words and phrases

Mnemonics are very useful for learning list-like facts—like the names of the planets or all German chancellors. For example, the initial letters of the sentence correspond to:

"My father explains to me our night sky every Sunday"
the initial letters of the eight planets:
Mercury - Venus - Earth - Mars - Jupiter - Saturn -Uranus - Neptune.

mnemonics

Information that's rhymed is also easier to remember. Everyone knows "Three-three-three, by Issos, a brawl." But there are countless other mnemonics on all sorts of topics. You can find a collection organized by topic at: www.alle-eselsbruecken.de

There are also scientific studies that demonstrate that various active ingredients have a positive effect on memory. For example, the memory-enhancing effect of substances contained in BRAINEFFECT FOCUS , namely vitamins B5 and B12, has been proven.
