Biohackers series on Netflix - science fiction or reality

The new Netflix series Biohackers premieres on August 20th. Find out how much the series has to do with real biohacking here.

The new Netflix series Biohackers was originally scheduled to premiere on April 30th. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, some scenes were deemed inappropriate, and the premiere date was postponed indefinitely. A few days ago, the official premiere date was finally announced.

1. This is what “Biohackers” is about

Mia (Luna Wedler) is just beginning her medical studies in Freiburg. Here she meets the brilliant lecturer Prof. Tanja Lorenz (Jessica Schwarz), a brilliant expert in the field of genetic research.

Mia gains her professor's trust and gradually enters the world of illegal genetic experiments and biohacking. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Mia and her professor share a bond that they don't want to be made public.

3. Biohackers in reality

The term biohacking has several meanings. We explain this in detail in this article:

What is biohacking?

In the meantime , however, the term has become established as a synonym for self-optimization in all areas of life. Genetic modifiability can be caused by more than just scientific and medical experiments.

Every person influences their genes daily through the things they do. Your actions , your diet , and even your thoughts can have long-term effects on your genes.

The good thing about this form of biohacking is that it doesn't create any unpleasant surprises , like when you deliberately tamper with your genetic code.

At BRAINEFFECT , we focus primarily on nutrition . That's why our nutritionists and coaches are committed to developing new performance foods that support you in all areas of your daily life .

4. Our Biohackers Review

The experience of the first season of "Biohackers" can be summarized as follows: clichés ahead with a fitting background, true-to-life characters, a relatively well-done buildup of tension, and a moderately addictive experience. But let's start from the beginning.

Mia Akerlund (Luna Wedler) is the main character in the series. Upon arriving in Freiburg, she first meets her rather quirky flatmates.

Characters who couldn't be more different. Lotta, the perfect spoiled-girl image, Chen-Lu, the intelligent plant hacker in her senior year, and Ole, the token biohacker.

It soon becomes clear that Mia isn't in Freiburg to study. As a first-year medical student, her attention is focused on the renowned genetic researcher and professor Tanja Lorenz (Jessica Schwarz).

A short intro and we're off to our first encounter with biohacking – a green glowing mouse. Yep, fluorescent genes aren't neglected in the first season of the series. Plant lady Chen-Lu also takes a shine to her glowing roommate.

Unfortunately, it doesn't go into much more detail. In fact, the failed self-experiments of wannabe streamer Ole actually make biohacking, in the sense of self-optimization, seem idiotic, far from DNA modification.

Even among Ole's roommates, his obscene self-experiments are rather frowned upon and contribute little to educating the biohacking scene.

The series focuses squarely on biohacking in the sense of genetic optimization of humans. The main focus is on a treatment method that is intended to free humanity from hereditary diseases in the future.

In the process, Professor Lorenz modifies the babies' DNA to artificially induce and subsequently treat hereditary diseases. In addition to DNA modification, biohacking encompasses two other major areas.

On the one hand, the self-optimization of the body and mind through certain diets and routines as well as the use of technology for self-optimization.

5. Conclusion

Biohackers is a nice thriller series with a feature film feel, but in some places it's too simplistic to be very engaging.

Typical series elements like love story, teen drama, and a modern-day textbook villain unfortunately overshadow the scientific content. Nevertheless, we'll stay tuned and look forward to season 2. Perhaps with more details on the topic of biohacking!

Biohacking of body and mind through diet and routines, as we live it, is not covered in the series.
