The brand-new series "Biohackers" premiered on August 20th. And as we all know, a season was quickly snapped up. That's why we've compiled our top 3 Netflix, YouTube series, and documentaries on the topic of biohacking and self-improvement.
1. Biohacking - Genetic engineering and self-optimization
Yep, you can also find the terms biohacking and self-optimization on the BRAINEFFECT website. But we don't actually tinker with DNA, do we?
No, not us at BRAINEFFECT. According to the definition [1], biohacking does involve intervention in the human or animal body. The goal of genetic modification is usually the optimization of one or more specific components.
Trees that glow in the dark and could thus serve as lanterns are cited as an exemplary vision of biohackers. [1] But do "the" biohackers really exist as a kind of group or movement?
There are certainly biohacking groups, even here in Germany. Like an interest group, you can visit such a group and, if necessary, join it.
This means that there are groups of biohackers working toward shared visions, but there isn't "the one" biohacker group. Perhaps you, too, are more of a biohacker than you think! Optimizing your concentration, sleep, and recovery is also part of self-optimization.

2. 3rd place in Biohacking Series & Documentaries
Unfortunately not a Netflix series, but still good for a quick snack. A Galileo report on the topic of body hacking.
In just 11 minutes, you'll learn how biohackers manage to see in the dark, estimate distances with a magnet in their finger, and what a chip in your hand is good for.
Some of you may already be familiar with the latter. But putting black liquid in your eyes to improve your vision in the dark – isn't that dangerous?
For biohacker Gabriel Licina, the risk is no obstacle. In 2015, he volunteered to test the effects of Chlorin e6 on his own body with a team of biohackers.
Chlorin e 6 is a chemical compound of chlorophyll, which plants produce during photosynthesis. Deep-sea fish use it to see better in the dark. [2]
What's so amazing about it? It works! At the end of the report, Gabriel Licina proves that he can actually see better in the dark. Whether this remains a historic event in the history of biohacking or whether Chlorin e6 night vision drops are just a pipe dream remains unclear. #tobecontinued
And if all that sounds a bit too much for you, here's a variation of biohacking that doesn't involve tinkering with genetic code.
BRAINEFFECT HACK : Our ESSENTIALS provide you with essential vitamins and minerals to supplement your diet as needed. For athletes, vegans, and nutrition-conscious high performers.
3. 2nd place in the biohacking series & documentaries
A series format with a documentary feel. Our second place goes to the series “Unnatural Selection.”
The first season of the series debuted on Netflix in 2019. A total of 264 minutes immerses viewers in the world of genetic engineering. So, DNA is being tweaked here after all!
While researching a science fiction script, filmmaker Joe Egender came across an article about the so-called CRISP method, which allows sections of DNA to be specifically cut, removed, and replaced.
Joe convinced his colleague Leeor Kaufman to film a series about progress in genetic engineering. The goal was to make the development of genetic engineering and its extent, along with all its consequences, tangible.
The series wasn't intended to be a simple documentary. Marked by emotions and doubts, including those of scientists, it was intended to better express the possibilities and uncertainties in genetic research. [3]
Nonetheless, the series has a distinct interview feel. A well-deserved second place? See for yourself! #nospoiler And for anyone who's now really keen on biohacking, here's our tip:
BRAINEFFECT HACK : Our BIOHACKING KIT PRO provides you with all the essentials you need to get started with self-optimization. Of course, it also includes expert coaching and an online workshop!
4. Our number 1 biohacking series & documentaries
Which Netflix documentary made it to number one? Here's a quick hint:
High-performance sport without meat? Never! Contrary to popular belief that high-performance sport cannot be successfully completed without meat, top athletes show us how they perform as conscious vegans.
Curtain up for: The Game Changers! The trailer has 14,562,781 views on YouTube today. That's a lot! The nearly 1.5-hour documentary was released on Netflix on September 16th last year.
James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic, and Chris Paul appear in support of the #goplantbased movement. The main character and inspiration of the documentary is former UFC fighter James Wilks.
After his injury-related retirement, Wilks embarked on a search for a diet that would support his recovery. He adopted a purely plant-based diet and became a vegan.
Worth a try? Controversially discussed due to the non-vegan diets of some of the actors, such as Jackie Chan, the documentary certainly caused a stir. The experiments with NFL football players also provide further stimulus for discussion.
Less cloudiness in the blood and increased duration and intensity of erections during sleep – this is how Wilks underlines the positive effects of a purely plant-based meal compared to meat consumption.
Hooked? You can find key learnings and a nutrition plan on the documentary's official website. It's not without reason that The Game Changers is our number one biohacking series and documentaries. With our products, we also support vegan performance. #perfomvegan
BRAINEFFECT HACK : Our product range not only offers you numerous vegan options, but is also perfectly suited to supplementing a vegan diet. Our VEGAN BASICS provide you with the necessary B vitamins and minerals to optimally complement your specific diet.
5. Conclusion
Making the impossible possible – the limits of biohacking may only exist in our imagination. But self-optimization is entirely individual and begins with better coping with your everyday life. You don't have to be a scientist to do this. Know your goals, and we'll accompany you on your journey!
